CASTLE OF SAUMUR

Saumur

About the Town

Boutique shops, a famous artisan cheese shop sits next to the butterfly cafe, a great atmospheric french cafe in the heart of the town.  There is a food market every Saturday which is simply stunning, with an array of artisan food and something not to be missed.

Historic

A chic Fairy Tale Castle built on a rock, in this beautiful market Town.  Once a barracks and then a prison, and an ammunition depot in the 19th Century the Castle fell into disrepair.  Saumur then bought the site from the ministry of war and it was then rebuilt in 1906.

It was originally constructed in the 10th century by Theobald I, Count of Blois, as a fortified stronghold against Norman predations. It overlooks the confluence of the Loire and the Thouet. In 1026 it came into the hands of Fulk Nerra, count of Anjou, who bequeathed it to his Plantagenet heirs. Following its destruction in 1067, the castle was rebuilt by Henry II of England in the later 12th century.
